Caught in Time: How Community Screenings Saved Francis’s Life

Francis, a 42-year-old farmer from Mukono, felt fine—just slightly more tired than usual after a day in the fields. He only walked over to the UHI mobile health tent out of curiosity when the outreach team visited his village square.

Within minutes of a routine echocardiogram and blood pressure assessment, doctors identified early-stage hypertensive heart disease that had gone completely undetected. Left unmanaged, it could have led to a sudden cardiac event. Today, Francis is receiving targeted treatment locally and living a healthy, active life.

Stories like Francis’s demonstrate the core mission of UHI’s grassroots outreach: catching silent cardiovascular conditions before they become critical emergencies. By meeting Ugandans where they live and work, early detection transforms potential tragedies into manageable recoveries.
