Training Village Health Teams in Rheumatic Heart Care

Preventing heart disease begins far upstream from the operating table. Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD)—a condition that often starts with a simple, untreated sore throat in childhood—remains one of the leading causes of heart complications among young adults in developing regions.

During our recent field outreach program, UHI initiated dedicated training workshops for local Village Health Teams (VHTs) and clinic nurses. These frontline workers were equipped with the tools to spot early signs of strep throat, educate parents on proper treatment, and recognize early red flags of heart distress.

By empowering local health advocates with practical cardiovascular knowledge, we build a permanent defense line against preventable heart conditions across Uganda’s communities.
