Uganda Heart Institute Inaugurates New Board of Directors to Advance Cardiovascular Care

The Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) has officially ushered in a new chapter of leadership. In a formal ceremony held at the Golden Tulip Hotel, a newly appointed nine-member Board of Directors was officially sworn in and inaugurated, marking the beginning of a strategic four-year term dedicated to transforming heart health across the nation.

The high-profile event brings together top medical minds, policy makers, and government officials, all focused on a singular, critical mission: expanding and enhancing cardiovascular care for all Ugandans.

A Distinguished Leadership Team

The newly formed governance team is chaired by Dr. James Magara, a highly respected professional expected to steer the institute toward major developmental milestones over the next four years.

The swearing-in ceremony was officially presided over by the Hon. Minister of State for Health – General Duties, Anifa Kawooya Bangirana. While officiating the event, the Minister emphasized the government’s steadfast commitment to supporting specialized medical institutions like UHI. She tasked the new board with driving innovation, improving clinical outcomes, and tackling the growing burden of non-communicable diseases—particularly cardiovascular conditions—in Uganda.

Charting the Next Four Years

The Uganda Heart Institute has consistently been at the forefront of specialized healthcare in East Africa, performing complex life-saving surgeries and cardiac interventions. However, with demand for these services growing daily, the new leadership steps in at a pivotal moment.

Over their four-year tenure, the board is expected to prioritize several key areas:

  • Expanding Infrastructure: Accelerating projects to increase bed capacity and state-of-the-art surgical theaters.
  • Enhancing Human Resource Capacity: Training more local cardiac specialists, nurses, and technicians to handle advanced procedures.
  • Community Outreach and Prevention: Scaling up public awareness campaigns to educate Ugandans on heart-healthy lifestyles, early detection, and routine screenings.

Looking Ahead with Shared Vision

Following the inauguration, the management of the Uganda Heart Institute expressed immense optimism about the future. In an official statement, the institute noted:

“We look forward to the leadership and vision the new Board brings as we continue advancing heart health in Uganda.”

With a solid governance framework now securely in place, UHI is well-positioned to strengthen its clinical excellence, expand access to affordable cardiac care, and save countless lives across the region.
